Crazy Daisy

This little (not really little) cat is so silly. I think she likes to taunt me by performing one of my least favorite tricks. She sits at the top of the cat landing (no pun intended) and puts her fronts legs and head through the spindles. It makes me so nervous. I am sure she won't fall, but I do worry.

And, when she's not hanging out on the landing she likes to play with the spoon in my cup of Chai tea. Crazy Daisy!!!

Shelly was lucky enough to go shopping with her friend and her friend's grandma the other day. While out shopping MeeMaw bought the girls matching tops. They agreed that they would both wear them on Monday. So, once off the bus, I snapped a photo of them in their matching outfits. So fun!!!

Shelly turned 8 on Monday. I just can't believe it. What a great little girl she is! She makes us smile and laugh and is always there to help. I love her to pieces.

My dad was in town for her birthday and it was nice to have him here to spend time with us.

The Hello Kitty Party

Today my sweet little Shelly turns 8!!!! What a special little girl she is. Shelly always knows how to make things happier and lighter. She is just the best!

On Friday, she had a few neighborhood friends and their sisters over for a simple little Hello Kitty party. The girls played Wii, played in Shelly's room, colored, had some treats, ate dinner out at Red Robin, enjoyed some cake, watched Shelly open presents, and finally got a chance to shop in the "Shello Kitty" shop. Dollars were earned for their great behavior and then they were able to purchase various fun favors to take home.

I just wanted to chronicle how Daisy ended up in the Today Show contest. I like to tape the KLG and Hoda portion of the Today Show and watch it later. So, the girls and I were watching it one afternoon and they announced the Cutest Pet Contest. So, I thought...Daisy's cute, I'll enter her. So with the click of a few buttons I had uploaded three of my favorite Daisy pictures (admittedly they were of her when she was a little kitten at about 4 months old...she's now 8 months old).

Time passed and I didn't really think of the contest. My only hope was that they might show her in their random line up of animals throughout the week. On Wednesday, the 11th, the people from The Today Show called and emailed asking if Daisy was still available to travel. John actually got the call and assured the woman we were able to travel and that I would just be thrilled to know they had called. Her parting comment on Wednesday was to be sure and watch the show on Thursday.

John and I waited eagerly for the big announcement and were ecstatic (well I was) when they flashed Daisy's photo on the screen. It was super exciting to hear Kathie Lee comment on little Daisy. From there I began my mass media publicity blitz. I was emailing everyone, posting info to Facebook, and I even tweeted about the contest on Twitter.

So, as we wait for Monday morning to arrive with the Top 5 results, we are just so happy that Daisy gained a small amount of national attention. No matter the results, we are thrilled that they considered her for the contest and she was included in the top 10.

Zoning Out

I'm ready to dosome major cleaning out in this house! I decided the best way forme to go about this major cleaning adventure is to break the house down intozones. So, I came up with ten zones for our house. The zones were determined bythe placement of these spots in my home. I am being really brutal and toughwith junk in these zones. I have tackled zone 1, 2, and part of 3 already and I am feeling goodabout the bags of items that are already at the Goodwill, as well as, thethings that made it to the trash!!!

The best part ofmy plan? No pressure!!! I don’t have unrealistic time frames for completingthese zones. And, I think that in itself is motivating me more. I like this plan.

I did go out ofthe zones and collected all (but one) of my fake trees and I am getting rid of them. Ihave some really nice trees that I spent quite a bit of money on and I hate tojust donate them. So, they may be for sale on facebook or craigslist, soon.

Oh, and John madea funny comment the other day. When he got home, he said it looked like we weremoving!!! Ha Ha. I told you, I’m being brutal with this purging of junk idea.

What a Year

On New Year's Eve, the girls filled out these fun forms about 2011 and their thoughts on 2012. I wasn't sure what they would think of the idea. So, I was really surprised when they began working on it and really gave it lots of thought. They came up with some great answers and I was excited to see how they felt about the past year. Each of them presented them to the family and we all discussed their plans for 2012. Fun activity.

We had a fun little appetizer dinner for our New Year's Eve celebration. We had pepperoni dip, onion dip, shrimp, clementines, grapes, and chips.

The girls spent time on their iPods and Daisy hung out playing with her toys. We enjoyed a relaxed NYE at home playing games and watching football. All but one of us made it until midnight. Shelly went to bed at 11:00 and we taped the ball dropping for her to watch in the morning.

On New Year's Day we watched the ball drop and jumped on bubble wrap to make a festive popping sound. It was a double fun NYE at our house---celebrated on the 31st and the 1st!!!

Love the numbers in the new year!

2-0-1-2, so much more appealing to me than 2011. So eager for the new year. Love fresh, new beginnings.

We took down our Christmas tree this morning and once it was down we had a carpet full of tree needles. We took the tree out the front door and vacuumed up all of the needles left behind. Once the tree was out of there we took down the curtains in our dining room and office. I am planning to replace them, but for the time being I love the big open windows in the front of our house. I may change my mind and leave those windows curtain-free.

Then it was time to head outside and take down the garland around the door and on the front steps, as well as, the mailbox decorations. We also gathered up the net lights and tucked them all into the outdoor lighting box. I did leave the big wreath on the front door and I may just add a few little items to it to make it look a bit wintery.

Once our chores were complete, the girls and I were off for a walk in the neighborhood. It was a nice temperature out and felt good to take a walk. There's a little path in the back of the golf course that heads through the woods into another neighborhood. It's always a fun adventure to head down the trail. Lily and I both noticed how pretty the little pond was in the woods and what a perfect place it would be for taking photos. Next time we walk, I'll bring the camera.

And now, we are enjoying the first day of the new year snuggled inside watching football, reading books, playing Wii games, and enjoying life.

On Christmas morning the girls open their stocking stuffers from Santa and then make their way on to their Santa gifts. After Santa's presents, we all open the remainder of our gifts. We enjoy a yummy breakfast of sticky buns, sausage casserole, and mimosas. It's always a morning of excitement.

Holiday Activity Fail

One of our fun Advent calendar activities was the making of a peppermint gingerbread house. Well, it was a fail! And, I just had to share it.

We decorated all of the pieces and then attempted to put it together. Well, that wasn't happening. So, it now sits as a decorative centerpiece on the kitchen table in a big heap! But, we sure did have fun!

I love the whole idea of Christmas cards. I enjoy getting them and I love the photos that accompany so many of the cards. I must admit that over the last several years I had lost a little of my Christmas card joy. But, this year, I tried to channel that joy again and I set up the girls for a few different holiday poses. The pose that won out was the one of the girls with our new kitty. She is 7 months old and this cat is no little thing. I loved that they were all looking at the camera when I snapped the picture. Once again, I chose to have the pictures/cards done at Costco. I am always pleased with their service and quality and you can't beat the price.

When the cards come in to the house, I let everyone read them and then they go up on the card wall. This started a few years back when I saw this idea on Becky Higgins' blog. I loved how simple it was, yet looked so festive. We keep the cards up on the wall for awhile. Sometimes it's late January before they come down.

Missing Mom

I can't really count the number of times I have thought of my mother during this holiday season. I do know that it has been many. There was the day in Michael's when I really needed a special color bow and I wasn't sure I wanted to create it myself so I was shopping for a pre-made bow. And, right in the middle of shopping I started to cry. I just wanted to be able to call my mom, get her advice on the bow color, and then hopefully have her make it for me.

Then there was the day John and I were out to lunch sitting next to a table of older women who were exchanging their Christmas gifts with each other. The lady closest to me looked very much like my mom and her Vera Bradley purse was the clincher. Again, I started to cry.

Or the day that we decorated the tree and added the spider she made at the end. I cried then, too.

Time heals all wounds? With time things will get better? You'll find closure?

Well, I'm 2 years and 9 months from my mother's death and let me just say...wounds have not healed, time does not make all things better, and I have not found closure.

But, I have two wonderful daughters, a terrific husband, a great father, fabulous sisters, nieces, and nephews, and many people who make my life better. And, because of all of them I will think about the reason for the season and remember to be joyful.

Random Thoughts in December

1. The real tree is up and it is in our front window in the dining room. I love that we have a real tree this year. I catch a whiff of it every time I walk down the stairs.

2. There were 3 children home sick from Shelly's class last Friday. Then there were 8 out on Monday and THEN 9 out on Tuesday!!! Shelly said only one child was out yesterday. It's a stomach bug that's causing all of these absences. I am praying HARD that Shelly can divert this illness.

3. We have been having a great time with the advent calendar. On Tuesday night the activity was a cup of hot chocolate. The girls were thrilled with this one. It proves it doesn't have to be big and expensive, just something fun.

4. Gifts have been purchased and I am ready to go and now I need to concentrate on putting together teacher/teacher assistant gifts. That means I need to bake up a little something. Not too sure what that will be quite yet.

5. When the girls return to school after the holiday break they will be starting their second semester. I can't believe we are half way through the school year! Wow!!!

6. A photo of the girls at our neighbor's home where we got our real tree. Yippy for the ease of pick up and the great price for the tree, garland, and wreath!

7. I think our family has done a great job of keeping things happy and simple this holiday season. We have chosen to participate in things that make us all smile and I am looking forward to more holiday adventures.

From Baby to Babysitter

Wasn't it just yesterday that I was looking high and low for a babysitter in a town where I knew no one? Looking for someone to watch Lily on the rare night that John and I might go out for the evening. Listening to Lily cry as we headed for the door and feeling so sad to leave her behind.

And now, I sit in my home after having dropped her off to babysit for another little two year-old girl. Lily is now the one making sure the little girl is happy while her parents are away. She is the one responsible for getting her to bed and making sure she's safe. And, I know it was just yesterday that I watched her wave her tiny little hand at me as I walked out the door.

The Nutcracker

Ready for the ballet

This weekend the girls and I went with friends to see The Nutcracker ballet. It was a fun addition to our holiday adventures. We started with lunch at The Mellow Mushroom...a cool pizza place with lots of pizzaz.

Then we went to a quaint theater in our area for the ballet performance. I have seen The Nutcracker performed many times (like somewhere in the neighborhood of 10---it was always a field trip for the kids when I was teaching), but this one was so well done with an up close view of the performers. The girls enjoyed it and now they have experienced the ballet!!

Happy 6th Dear Ol' Blog

Hard for me to believe that I've been blogging for six years! I was never really sure where I was headed with this blog. It has evolved over time.

I, originally, began blogging for my mom. I would tell her things about the girls on the phone and then later on my blog, post a photo of what we had talked about. She enjoyed seeing the pictures and many times printed them out at home. After her death, I questioned whether I would still need to keep a blog. But, I had a few faithful followers who nicely encouraged me to continue with the blog. And, I am happy that I did.

For me, blogging is a place to share my life, my thoughts, and my photos. I love having this forum and I'm so glad I embraced the idea of blogging.

On my continuing theme regarding how much Shelly & I resemble one another as children, I have more photo proof.

Shelly was in her 2nd grade class play and played the part of a rag doll. She wore the exact same costume that my mother made for me when I was 8. Right down to the yarn wig that my mom had saved in the box of Halloween items at my parent's house. Can't tell you how happy I was to find the costume and even happier to reveal the wig in that box. I was not eager to recreate a Raggedy Ann yarn wig.

I was in the kitchen the other day and as I unloaded the dishwasher I thought about how much I love my cabinets with the plates, bowls, and wine glasses. It just always makes me smile.

One of my all time best deals ever are my white Oneida plates. I love this set. It's simple, white, and has a slight little dot around the edge. I purchased a 42 piece set at Kohl's (several years ago) for a grand total of $30!!!! Love these.

Here's a labelled version of the cabinet. Oh, and I do not like cold, hard butter. So, I kept ours in the cabinet to stay warm and soft. If this offends you, I am so sorry.

I also discovered how nicely the plates from Target match the Anthro bowls I enjoy collecting. My plan with the Target plates was just to use them in the summer, but they are so nice and big and hold plenty. So, I keep them in the cabinet with the other plates and use them most often.

I enjoy the cabinet with the glasses in it, as well. And, I obviously have a thing for Tervis tumblers. The shelf with the Tervis cups is about three deep. So, there are roughly 25 cups on that shelf. We like Tervis tumblers. And, the glasses on the top shelf are from Crate and Barrel about 15 years ago. The mugs on the middle shelf make me smile...some of our favorites.

At the Ugh-Mart (Walmart) the other day I found some tarts by Better Homes and Gardens. They come in a little square six pack for $2.00. These smell terrific and I put in 2 squares at a time. So it works out to be a great deal.

I sat and watched the final show with Regis yesterday. I have to admit it brought a tear or two to my eye. I will be sad to see him go. As others have said, he brought lots of laughs into our homes. And sometimes those laughs seemed to come at times when I needed them the most.

When I think about Regis, I remember watching him with Kathie Lee in the late 80s with my mom. We would tape their shows and watch them on the VCR at night. We actually had a VCR that had a corded remote control with it...makes me laugh thinking about that cord running across the den to the couch. My mom was in charge of the remote and when it was time for a commercial I would say to her, "FF!". That meant that she needed to fast forward through the commercials. Together, mom and I had many laughs and shed a few tears while watching Regis. We even discussed his show years later when Kelly Ripa replaced Kathie Lee and I had moved to North Carolina. Over the phone we would talk about the day's guest or some funny thing that happened during the show.

So, I am sad to see an era of Regis end and even sadder that I couldn't watch it with my mom by my side.

After seeing this video on Pinterest, I decided I needed to give it a try. I did it, but with a very low flame. I must have done a little something wrong---too much oil or not enough---not sure what went wrong. But, here are some photos of my process.

Cut a shape on the top peel

Pop out the shape
This creates a little vent for the flame

After the "wick" (the pith) is saturated with the oil, light it with a match

Place the vented top on the clementine and watch the flame burn until the oil is gone

As I go through the many photos from my aunt's home, I am warmed by the images that show our family similarities. Like the one of my mom and aunt playing with their dolls. Last week I drove nine hours by myself to Pennsylvania for my Aunt Sue's funeral service. My sisters, father, and brother-in-law were all there to remember my aunt. It was also so nice to see where my mother rests. I miss her so much.

We also used that time to clean out her home. As we cleaned, packed, and prepared her items we came across photos and treasures that were so special. It was a weekend of many emotions and we were all worn out by the end of our time there.

I got in the car on Monday to make the nine hour trip home. I must say, I was pretty proud of myself and my solo drive. I wasn't overly excited about getting in the car alone to drive so far, but I did it and I felt good about it once it was over.

October has been filled with opportunities to celebrate Halloween. So, we wrapped up the month and the holiday on the 31st. Shelly had her class party complete with a parade. She was dressed as a 60s mod girl for the party.

Once the school day finished we headed home and changed into costume #2. She was a 50s girl for the trick or treating event and Lily channeled her inner 80s girl for Halloween. It was a flashback kind of Halloween. The neighbors got together for a little food and drink and a chance for the kids to see one another before heading out to trick or treat. Another fun evening.

Saturday was a full day! We started with a little birthday celebration for John. We had a fancy breakfast (yummy omelets), presents, and cards for him.

Then it was off to Eric's football game. He was playing a nearby college, so we were able to be there to see him play. It was a windy and chilly afternoon---perfect football weather. His team came up with a victory and we had a chance to say "hi" after the game.

Poor little Shelly was unable to go on her school field trip to Old Salem today. She was soooooo disappointed. Last night she woke up feeling sick to her stomach and was up all night vomiting (sorry, TMI). So, she spent the day on the couch with a garbage can by her side.

In the meantime, sweet Daisy had some surgery this week---declawing and spaying/neuturing. So she came home with a flexible cone around her neck so that she wouldn't mess with her surgery spots. She has been such a good little patient.

Later in the day the infirmed found one another and snuggled.

A little about my aunt. She worked at the Pittsburgh Press and was divorced twice and widowed once. She never had children of her own. Her name is Ada Mary, but we called her Aunt Sue because Aunt Ada Mary was tough to say when we were little. She was a true animal lover. Aunt Sue owned several cats and the dog I remember the most was Max. He was a beautiful fluffy Keeshond whom she adored.

One of my most vivid memories was seeing Aunt Sue get off the plane to come visit us at Christmas. She would be dressed to the nines and carrying boxes tied in twine filled with pastries from a bakery in Pittsburgh. She was a terrific aunt who loved us all so much and cared about her great nieces and nephews as much as she did us. She will be missed. Love you, Aunt Sue.

There was a golf tournament at our golf course this past weekend. So, it was interesting to see a new car parked on the green behind our house. A golfer who achieved a hole-in-one would be the winner of this Nissan Altima. It has been awhile since we've seen happy and fun events at the course. This was a promising sight of (hopefully) better times for GNGC.

Please send prayers to heaven for my dear Aunt Sue (my mother's only sibling). She passed away on Monday morning and in my mind she was welcomed into heaven by my mom and reunited with their mother and father. I can only imagine how lovely that must have been for all of them. I find comfort in the idea that they are together for eternity.

We went to a neighborhood Halloween party on Saturday night. Shelly decided to go with the 60s Go Go girl costume for this party. Lily played it a bit more low-key with a witches hat. Ok,this isn't our most original craft idea, but the girls had fun with it anyway. About five years ago I bought a wooden cat and Boo sign to decorate for Halloween.

And, today we decided to paint them for an outside display! Lily painted the BOO sign and Shelly worked on the black cat. We were happy with them both and plan to put them on our walkway as a little something extra this Halloween.

My mom was a fighter. In 1997 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She survived the disease and beat it for over 11 years. I was always so proud of her strength and the way she handled all of the struggles that came her way during that time. A year after her diagnoses I was married and my mother was a vision of loveliness when she walked down the aisle to Ave Maria. She was the picture of survival and an example for all of us.

So, as a reminder in October, please be sure to have regular mammograms and take care of your body.

Pottery Painting!

So, we let those pottery pieces air dry for quite awhile (like 5 days) and then got busy painting them. I chose not to use the paints that came with the pottery kit and went with my new containers of Martha Stewart acrylic paints from Michael's.

The girls really had fun painting the pots. Lily went with a pink and green scheme and Shelly chose a purple and blue combo. They let the colors dry and came back and added the polka dots with a sponge applicator.

So sweet these two. They love to hang out together. Shelly loves to pick her up and give her kisses. Daisy loves to follow her and attack Shelly's feet. I think the bond is working out nicely for them both!

Library Thoughts

A few days ago I went to the public library to check out a book Lily wanted that wasn't at her school library. I found myself at the library around 11:00---just as the toddler story time was ending. There were moms and toddlers and babies all over the place. Moms seemed to be corralling the toddlers and attempting to navigate their strollers.

I instantly was sent back in time and reminisced about the many times Lily and Shelly and I would go to story time at the library. It was always a welcome break combined with complete mayhem. It was a chance to interact with other moms with kids, but once out in the big world, some of those kids were't so cooperative. But, as I looked at those tired moms the other day, I thought about all that lies ahead of them. The changes that come when their children go off to school and the new-found independence of both their children and themselves. Then I began to wonder about the changes ahead of me. And, make a vow to try and savor all of these moments with my girls in the here and now. I am so thankful to have such full and happy memories of the time I spent with them when they were small girls. And I love that I have these photos that capture them together.

Pottery Time

I hate to admit this, but quite awhile ago the girls got a pottery wheel set (from Aunt Stacy and Uncle Pat) and we just now took it out and put it to good use! I was really wishing that Krissy (my expert potter niece) was here to help us. So, Krissy the next time you come to visit we may need you to do a class on pottery throwing!!!

Shelly and I went first and her bowl was not so so grand. But, when Lily got involved with her bowl, she did a great job. I think she had the technique down a bit better than I did for Shelly's. We will let the bowls air dry and then get to painting and embellishing them tomorrow.

I resisted this project because of the potential for dirtiness and sure enough, it was a messy event. But, fun, nonetheless.

It was another day of cheerleading for Shelly. The game was postponed on Saturday until Sunday afternoon because of all the rain we had last week. Shelly showed up for some cheering good times. It is fun to watch her do her thing and smile the whole time.

Once I picked up Lily and brought her home from running club on Monday, we looked outside to see a squirrel sitting precariously on the side of the pool. He (assuming here that it was a boy squirrel) gingerly made his way closer to the pool's edge and then suddenly he was perched with a back leg and front leg on the side of the pool and the legs in the water. He was reaching closer and closer toward the water in an attempt to get a little sip of H2O.

As this event unfolded in front of us, Lily shouted out, "Look at the deer". And sure enough, there were four deer heading to the trees on the back of our lot. In one glance you could see a squirrel hanging by a thread in the pool and deer eating the leaves on our trees. A regular wildlife sanctuary in our own backyard.

It was Pirate Day on Friday at Shelly's school. We resurrected the same top that Lily wore four years ago. I had embroidered it with a skull and was pretty darn proud of it at the time. This time around I was just pretty darn proud that I remembered to hang on to the shirt for Shelly. Here they are in their similar outfits. Shelly forgot to put on her eye patch for the photo.

Star Spirit

Shelly joined the community cheerleading squad this year and she is just loving it. For two years she has dreamed of being a cheerleader. So, on Saturday when she was on the track cheering on the football team, she just couldn't stop smiling! It was so fun to see her pretty little face beaming while she stood in front of the crowd.

As a result of her enthusiasm, she received the first Star Spirit award of the season. Shelly gets to wear a pair of snazzy star sunglasses all week for winning the Star Spirit award. She was thrilled and I was super proud!

9/11 Remembered

As I think back on that day ten years ago, my most vivid recollection occurred after the plane crashed into the Pentagon building. I picked up the phone and called my mom. At 35 years old, I still wanted to talk to my mom and feel reassured and comforted by her voice. I remember asking her, "what kind of world have I brought my little girl into...what is happening?"

Ten years later, that same little girl has spent the last few days asking me so many questions about 9/11/01. She wants to know all about the events, the people, the stories...and so, we will spend the day remembering those people who were victims of such a horrific tragedy. We will pray for those who lost their lives and for those who were left behind.

11 Years

It was eleven years ago today that John and I made our decision to leave our jobs in Virginia Beach and move to NC.

Within two weeks of that decision, our house went on the market, we told our family about our move, and John moved to NC to begin a new job. And by Halloween, our little family of three were living in NC and beginning a whole new life.

So hard to believe that 11 years has passed since that day. I must admit that the transition to this new life hasn't always been easy. I miss my family in Virginia, dearly. But, I do know that the opportunities and changes have benefitted our family of four.

And, one of my ongoing goals is to continue to foster a happy life for our family...no matter where we live.

Favorite Things in My Town

So, I saw that Centsational Girl is having a "Favorite Things in My Town" party. So, it made me start thinking about the town that I have lived in for the last 11 years. Hard for me to believe that 11 years ago we left Virginia Beach (where I lived for 28 years) to move away from our families and make a new life in North Carolina. I miss my family and life in VB, but I am learning to embrace where I live now. So, here are three of my favorite things that about my town:

1. Peaceful and Calm Living:
We live in the country and it's quiet and a great place to raise a family. It takes me 20 minutes to get to the grocery store and 30 minutes to the closest Target. And, I am learning to be okay with that travel distance in exchange for a quiet and happy life on a golf course in the middle of nowhere.

2. Location:
We are right in the central part of North Carolina. That means that we can make it to the mountains in about 3 hours and the beach in about 4 hours. We are 2 hours away from Charlotte, an hour away from Durham, and just a little over an hour away from Raleigh. The perfect locale to travel to all kinds of different areas in our state.

3. Furniture Stores Galore
We are lucky enough to live so close to so many great furniture, fabric, and home decor stores. We are only about 45 minutes from High Point, NC and this is known as the furniture capital of the world. Much of our furniture has come from the Furniture Markets held twice a year in High Point.

I went with some friends to see this movie last night and loved it. What an amazing and powerful story. I cried and cried and cried. I also applauded at the end of the film. Don't think I've ever done that before. So, so good! Go see it.

Daisy Update

Now that the girls are back in school, I have less opportunities to snap their photos. So, my latest photo victim is Daisy. She loves to hang out on the desk while I'm at the computer. I caught a few pictures of her the other day and realized how much she has grown in the last few weeks. I took her to the vet today and she weighed in at 4 pounds 13 ounces!!! We are loving our little Daisy cat.

Krissy Goes to College!

Our niece Krissy headed off to college today. She is now a freshman at UMW. I am so proud of her and know that she will do well at school. My sister and brother-in-law are now empty nesters. I think that means she can come see me more often, right???? Love to all of you.

Haphazard Thoughts

More of my disjointed thoughts for the day. Chose not to use the word random in the title...that seemed boring and repetitive.

Our Summer to do list came down and this is what it looked like before it was removed. We had plenty left on the list to do, but with our shorter summer, I felt fine with what we completed.

I was at TJ Maxx and I found this cute set of cards by this terrific artist. I think I'll use a few of them to frame and add to our art galleries throughout the house.

Shelly sure loves to hold Daisy! They have a good time together.

Tuesdays! What is the deal with Tuesday??? My sister and I decided it was one of our least favorite days of the week. Every other day seemed to have a purpose. Tuesday...not so much.

Glad that the new tv shows will return soon.

Wishing my mom was here. I miss her so much and would love to chat with her about the girls' new adventures at school. I would listen to her advice and ask her questions about my own youth and her mothering skills when I was in junior high. Every day I find something different to miss about her. Every day.

The first day of school was a success. Everyone got to school and home without a hitch. Smiles were on their faces and lots of stories to be told. A good day and a relieved mother. First day of 6th and 2nd grade is now under our belt!

The girls are off at school this morning. I created little first day of school gift for their main teachers. It was a simple plastic cup with a lid and straw filled with the small packages of lemonade and pink lemonade. I also found this cute school year calendar at Target to add to the gift. Hope the teachers enjoy it and hope the girls have a great year.

Thinking of that David Bowie tune in my above title. So many changes are sitting just around the corner for our family. Middle school, elementary school without her big sister, and an earlier wake up time for all of us. Changes! All good (well, maybe not that early wake up time) changes.

Questions hang in the balance. How will it go for my girls? Will they make new friends? Like their teachers? Take new risks? Handle things well?

It is another year of starting fresh and becoming the best they can be. It's an exciting time, yet a bit of a melancholy time for me. But, the focus is on them and I know they will shine.
