The Last Conversation

We talked about the snow days the girls were enjoying in March. We talked about our lunch out with John and a trip to the grocery store. I asked her if she knew what a cloche was? She said a close fitting hat. I agreed and said that is was also a glass cover (like a cake stand cover) and I had just purchased one for $1.99 at Goodwill. She was interested in it all. We talked about my sister's car battery dying in the BJ's parking lot. I told her I was excited that my sister and niece were on their way to NC to see us (and glad the car was repaired). She was happy for us all to see one another. She sounded really good...happy and at ease on the phone. When we ended our conversation I was sitting in my car in our driveway getting ready to unload the groceries from the car. I told her I better go and we both said "I love you" and I said "talk to you soon---bye".

This would be the last conversation I would have with my mother. The last time I would speak casually of the grocery shopping and bargain hunting I had done. The last time I would hear her voice and tell her I love you. It's a conversation that I hold onto like a priceless treasure. I don't want anything about it to be forgotten and I want to hang on to all of the fragile details of our last connection. Everything about it was normal and kind of ordinary and that is one of the things I love about it the most.

On Tuesday, March 3rd, I spoke with my mother for the last time.

  1. I popped by to thank you for sending the charm in Saucy's Hallowe'en Swap.

I just wanted to let you know how bittersweet it was to read this post. At the age of 17, I made the mistake of refusing to say "goodbye" to a friend because I would see him soon. He and his 4 year old son died instantly in a motorcycle accident about a month later. I make a point of saying goodbye now.

I'm glad you told your mother you loved her in that conversation. I'm sure that she knew this but we always need to hear it.
